Mars One is a private spaceflight project led by Dutch entrepreneur, Bas Lansdorp, to establish a permanent human colony on Mars.
Bas Lansdorp is a Dutch entrepreneur, he is the co-founder and CEO of Mars One.
Lansdorp received his Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Twente in 2003.
His primary focus was not on overcoming the technological challenges. It was the business model.

How realistic is this mission?
Who would go? Who in their right mind would volunteer for this idea?
What would it take? If we assume that technology will in fact evolve far enough to logistically support a Mars One venture, what psychosocial factors would need to be considered?

More than 78,000 people worldwide have volunteered to participate in the Mars One Project that aims to put a human settlement on the Red Planet by 2023 ... including 35 Canadians.
The US (17324), China (10241) and the UK (3581) have the most applicants.
A prebuilt habitat will be waiting for them
What are the concerns and risks?
Mars is a barren wasteland.
Gravity is less than half as strong as on Earth and atmospheric pressure is less than one percent of Earth's and consists of 95% carbon dioxide ... and hazardous dust storms.
It lacks a protective magnetic field, so deadly solar and galactic radiation reaches the surface virtually unimpeded
Volunteers risk of death from acute radiation sickness.
Radiation is an important point, but there are strategies to mitigate the risk.
The adverse effects of reduced or zero gravity and the mental challenges associated with spending months on end in a tiny box, hurtling through space.
Another concern is the funding for this project : If you have no money, then you're not going to Mars
The question of Mars One's ethical responsibilities to the people it proposes to send to Mars is a tricky one. Who's accountable for the safety of the people Mars One wants to blast off into space?

What would it take? -- Psychosocial factors:
Building a sense of community is imperative to success
Teamwork will be what ensures they survive the journey.
Psychosocial attributes: resiliency, adaptability, curiosity, ability to trust, creativity/resourcefulness.
When a person finds herself, or himself, on Mars, with no way of being able to come home, and potentially questioning the decision they have made, what is going to ground them in the choice they have made?
Their attitude.
Critical importance : an ability and openness to self-reflection and a willingness to build and maintain healthy relationships.
It's one-way voyage to Mars:
As for the one-way aspect of Mars One, how different it is from the departing mindset of those famous early explorers here on Earth?
